Session one
We had our session one last night! It was a fantastic experience and a valuable one—full of insights and lessons that will help shape the future of our campaign frame.
One major takeaway: we’ve identified a key flaw in the dual-scale combat system (Human-scale vs. A.E.G.I.S.). This was a misstep on my part. I hadn’t fully anticipated that many of the skills players choose are primarily tied to social or roleplay functions. By restricting those skills to A.E.G.I.S. (mech) mode only, I inadvertently limited meaningful player interaction—especially outside the cockpit.
Luckily, one of my newer, less experienced players ended up using one of those skills at just the right moment, and it worked beautifully. It reminded me how important it is to keep the story flowing and let the mechanics support, not hinder, the narrative. I’m really glad this came up early in our playtest—it gives me time to fix the issue and improve the system before it becomes baked in.
I’ll be working on a small errata and mechanical update this weekend to address that issue. That said, with the recent signing of my new job contract (yay!), I’ll have less time to work on side projects, so the update to the starter campaign guide might be slightly delayed.
On a brighter note: the enemy cards I’ve been prototyping worked great! The balance felt right, the mechanics clicked, and I’m confident they’re going to be a core part of the toolkit moving forward. I’m thinking of packaging and sharing them as I go—something downloadable for you all to try out.
We ended session one on a cliffhanger, right after the first major battle—perfect spot to build momentum for session two, though we haven’t scheduled it yet.
All in all, I walked away from this session with a stronger grasp of both Daggerheart’s mechanical flow and how I want our campaign frame to feel at the table. Can’t wait to keep refining it and bring you along for the ride.
Thanks for the continued support—and as always, I’d love your feedback. Hope you’re having a blast with your own games too! Enjoy!
